Shown everywhere your app appears. The strongest ranking signal of all metadata fields.

Your app name is the single strongest keyword signal on the App Store — and Apple cuts it off at exactly 30 characters. This counter uses the same grapheme-accurate counting Apple uses, so emojis, accented characters, and non-Latin scripts are measured correctly instead of being counted as multiple characters.

Type or paste your app name above to see a live count, how many characters remain, and whether you are leaving valuable keyword space unused.

How to use the app name character counter

  1. 1

Type or paste your app name into the field above.

  2. 2

Watch the live counter — it turns amber as you approach 30 characters and red if you exceed the limit.

  3. 3

Aim to use at least 24–30 characters: unused space is unused keyword ranking potential.

  4. 4

Test variations that combine your brand name with your highest-value keyword, e.g. “Brand: Keyword & Keyword”.

Why the 30-character limit matters for ASO

Apple weighs the app name more heavily than any other metadata field in its search algorithm. A keyword placed in your title typically ranks noticeably better than the same keyword placed in the subtitle or the hidden keyword field. That makes every one of the 30 characters valuable real estate.

The limit is enforced per character, not per byte — but “character” means a user-perceived character (grapheme). A single emoji like 👨‍👩‍👧 is one grapheme built from multiple Unicode code points. Tools that count code points or bytes will give you wrong numbers for names containing emojis, Korean, Japanese, or accented European characters. This counter normalizes your text (NFC) and counts graphemes, matching what App Store Connect accepts.

Best practices for App Store app names

The classic high-performing pattern is “Brand: Primary Keyword” or “Brand — Keyword & Keyword”. Keep the brand short so the keywords fit. Avoid repeating any word that already appears in your subtitle or keyword field: Apple deduplicates keywords across fields, so repetition wastes space without adding ranking power.

Avoid special characters and emoji in the name itself — Apple’s review guidelines (section 2.3.7) reject names with irrelevant keywords, prices, or decorative symbols. Names that read like keyword lists (“Photo Editor Collage Filter Camera”) are also a common rejection reason.

Frequently asked questions

What is the App Store app name character limit?

The App Store limits app names to 30 characters. The limit was reduced from 50 to 30 characters with iOS 11, and it applies per localization — each language version of your listing gets its own 30 characters.

Do emojis count as one character in an app name?

Visually, yes — App Store Connect counts user-perceived characters (graphemes), so one emoji generally counts as one character even if it is composed of several Unicode code points. However, Apple commonly rejects app names that use emojis or decorative symbols, so it is safer to keep them out of the name.

Should I use all 30 characters of the app name?

In most cases, yes. The app name is the strongest keyword field on the App Store, so unused characters are wasted ranking potential. A good target is 24–30 characters combining your brand with your most valuable keyword phrase.

Does the app name affect App Store search rankings?

Yes — more than any other field. Keywords in the app name carry the highest weight in Apple’s search algorithm, followed by the subtitle and the hidden 100-character keyword field. Moving a high-priority keyword into your name is one of the most effective ASO changes you can make.

Is the Google Play app title limit the same?

Google Play also limits app titles to 30 characters. The rules differ in the details though — check the Google Play Title Counter for Android-specific guidance.
