ℹ︎ The first few seconds matter most: previews autoplay muted in App Store search results.
Apple’s App Previews are short videos that play in your product page and, crucially, autoplay muted in search results. The rules are strict: each preview must run 15 to 30 seconds, you can add up to three per localization, resolutions are device-specific and mirror the screenshot sizes, and the footage must be captured from the app itself running on a device — Apple rejects previews built from marketing footage, hands holding phones, or content the app doesn’t actually show.
Google Play takes the opposite approach: there is no uploaded video file at all. The Play promo video is simply a public YouTube URL pasted into your listing, with no hard length limit (30 seconds to 2 minutes is the working convention) and far looser content rules. The table above lays out both specs side by side.
How to produce a compliant app preview
- 1
Script your first 5 seconds around your strongest feature — previews autoplay muted in search, and most viewers never reach second 10.
- 2
Capture footage directly from the app on a device or simulator at the target resolution; screen recording via QuickTime or Xcode is the standard workflow.
- 3
Edit to between 15 and 30 seconds — App Store Connect enforces both bounds.
- 4
Add captions or on-screen text for anything that needs narration, since default playback is muted.
- 5
Export at the device-specific resolution from the table and upload up to 3 previews per localization; for Google Play, upload to YouTube and paste the public URL instead.
Apple’s content rules: show the app, only the app
The defining constraint of App Previews is that they must consist of footage captured on-device from the app itself. Live-action scenes, actors, hands interacting with hardware, and aspirational lifestyle footage are all grounds for rejection. Light overlays are allowed — caption text, a device bezel, brief transition graphics — but the core content has to be genuine screen capture of shipping functionality. Showing features that are unreleased, behind a paywall without indication, or staged with fake data that misrepresents the app also violates review guidelines.
You get up to three previews per device size per localization, each 15–30 seconds, and they appear before your screenshots in the gallery. The first preview’s poster frame is what shows before autoplay kicks in, and you choose that frame in App Store Connect — pick one that reads as a strong screenshot in its own right, because on slow connections it is all some users see.
Google Play promo videos: a YouTube link, not an upload
On Google Play you never upload a video file. You paste the URL of a public or unlisted YouTube video into the promo video field, and Play embeds it on your listing with your feature graphic as the cover image. Because it is just YouTube, the constraints are YouTube’s: monetized-ads-enabled videos are disallowed (viewers would see pre-roll ads), age-restricted videos won’t embed, and the video must remain public for the listing to keep working — deleting or privating it silently breaks your listing.
The creative freedom is much wider than Apple allows: live action, voiceover, hands-on footage, and brand storytelling are all fine. The practical convention is 30 seconds to 2 minutes with the hook in the first 10 seconds. One warning for kids and family apps: videos in listings targeting children face additional ad and content restrictions, so check the Families policy before linking anything.
Frequently asked questions
How long can an iOS App Preview video be?
Between 15 and 30 seconds — both limits are enforced by App Store Connect. Videos shorter than 15 seconds or longer than 30 are rejected at upload, so edit to fit before exporting.
How many App Preview videos can I upload?
Up to three per device size, per localization. They display ahead of your screenshots in the product page gallery, and the first one autoplays muted in search results on supported devices.
Can I use marketing footage or actors in an App Preview?
No. Apple requires previews to be captured from the app running on a device. Live action, hands holding phones, and concept footage are rejected. Caption overlays and device bezels are acceptable additions on top of real screen capture.
What resolution does an App Preview need?
Resolutions are device-specific and correspond to the screenshot display sizes — you upload previews per device class just like screenshots, at the dimensions in the table above. Capturing on the target device or simulator gives you the correct resolution automatically.
How do Google Play promo videos work?
You paste a public YouTube URL into your Play Console listing — no file upload. The video embeds on your listing with the feature graphic as its poster. It must not have monetized ads enabled or be age-restricted, and it must stay publicly available.
Do preview videos autoplay with sound?
No — App Previews autoplay muted in search results and on product pages. Design for silence: use on-screen captions for anything important, and treat audio as an enhancement for the minority who tap to unmute.
