ℹ︎ With Xcode 14+ you can ship a single 1024 × 1024 icon and let Xcode generate every size.
The two stores anchor their icon requirements on different masters: the App Store wants a 1024×1024 px icon with no transparency, while Google Play requires exactly 512×512 px as a 32-bit PNG. On-device, iOS derives its sizes from a 60 pt base — 120 px at @2x and 180 px at @3x for the home screen — while Android uses density buckets and, since Android 8.0, adaptive icons built on a 108×108 dp canvas.
The table above lists every dimension with its context: where the icon appears, which scale factor applies, and format rules like Apple’s no-alpha requirement. Bookmark it for release day — a wrong icon size is one of the most common causes of a rejected binary upload.
How to use the icon size reference
- 1
Locate the platform section you are shipping to — iOS sizes are listed in points with @2x/@3x pixel equivalents, Android by density bucket.
- 2
Note the two store-listing masters first: 1024×1024 px for the App Store and 512×512 px 32-bit PNG for Google Play.
- 3
For Android 8.0+, design your adaptive icon on the 108×108 dp canvas and keep critical content inside the 66 dp safe zone.
- 4
Cross-check your Xcode asset catalog or Android res/mipmap folders against the table before archiving a release build.
How iOS icon sizes actually work: points times scale
iOS specifies icon sizes in points, then multiplies by the device’s scale factor. The home-screen app icon is 60 pt, which becomes 120×120 px on @2x devices and 180×180 px on @3x devices like the Pro iPhones. Spotlight (40 pt), Settings (29 pt), and notifications (20 pt) each get the same @2x/@3x treatment, which is how a single app ends up needing eight-plus icon files. The 1024×1024 px marketing icon for the App Store sits outside this system — it is a fixed pixel size, must be opaque, and must visually match the on-device icon or you risk rejection under guideline 2.3.
Since Xcode 14 you can supply just the 1024 px master and let Xcode generate the smaller slots automatically, which works well for bold, simple designs. Icons with fine detail still benefit from hand-checked smaller sizes — automatic scaling has no opinion about whether your glyph is still recognizable at 58 px in Settings.
Android: 512 px for the store, adaptive icons on the device
Google Play’s listing icon is exactly 512×512 px as a 32-bit PNG (alpha channel allowed in the format, though since the 2019 icon spec Google applies its own rounded-corner mask, so design full-bleed). On-device launcher icons follow density buckets: 48 px at mdpi scaling up through 96 px xhdpi to 192 px at xxxhdpi.
Adaptive icons, required in practice since Android 8.0, change the model entirely: you supply separate foreground and background layers on a 108×108 dp canvas, and the launcher masks them into a circle, squircle, or rounded square depending on the device. Only the central 66 dp diameter is guaranteed visible under every mask — logos or text that stray outside that safe zone get clipped on some launchers. The outer 21 dp on each side exists for parallax and motion effects, not for content.
Frequently asked questions
What size is the App Store app icon?
1024×1024 px, PNG or high-quality JPEG, fully opaque with no transparency, in sRGB or P3. App Store Connect rejects icons with an alpha channel, and the marketing icon must match the icon that ships in the binary.
What are the iPhone home screen icon sizes?
The home screen icon is 60 pt, which means 120×120 px on @2x devices and 180×180 px on @3x devices. Smaller contexts use 40 pt (Spotlight), 29 pt (Settings), and 20 pt (notifications), each also doubled or tripled by the device scale.
What size is the Google Play Store icon?
Exactly 512×512 px as a 32-bit PNG, maximum 1 MB. Google applies its own corner-radius mask and drop shadow in the store, so upload a full-bleed square rather than pre-rounding the corners yourself.
What is the adaptive icon safe zone?
Adaptive icons use a 108×108 dp canvas, but launchers mask it into different shapes and only the central 66 dp diameter circle is guaranteed to survive every mask. Keep your logo and any essential detail inside that zone; the outer margin is reserved for mask cropping and parallax effects.
Can iOS app icons have transparency?
No. Apple requires opaque icons — any transparent pixels are composited over black, which usually looks like a mistake. If your logo needs a “transparent” look, bake in an explicit background color instead.
